For me, working with words and speaking different languages is like working with an intricate, beautifully-crafted puzzle.

A tri-national, (Danish, American, and Swiss), I was born in Switzerland and have lived in France (twice), Africa, Sweden, England (three times), the U.S., Belgium (twice) Jerusalem, and New Zealand. 

In 2000, I came ‘full circle’ and returned to Switzerland – first to Zurich, and then to the shores of Lake Geneva, where I’ve been living since 2002.

Language fascinates me. Mother-tongue English, I’m fluent in French, Spanish, and Italian, and at ease in Danish; I’m relatively conversational in Swedish and German.

With an Honours degree in French and Italian Language and Literature from the University of Kent at Canterbury, and a love of writing and language, my professional career has always focused on the ‘multi’ environments: multi-cultural, multi-lingual and multinational.

In these environments, I’ve gained valuable experience in communications work in translation, copywriting, editing, or transcreation – or a combination of all four. Today, I use this experience to help you create written material with maximum impact.

For me, it’s about helping you unlock the potential of your written communications through clear, concise, and consistent language.

Translation

Anyone can use a dictionary or an online, automated translation service. It’s quick, convenient, and often free.In a pinch, it works.

And in an instant, it can also give entirely the wrong message.

Simply put, automated translation is rarely able to capture the full nuances in a language - hence the importance of a professional translator.

Many everyday words can have a multitude of meanings. In English for example, the word “set”, has over 400 meanings... The words ‘run’, ‘stand’, ‘strike’, and ‘turn’ have at least 200 meanings - each.

This is where a skilled translator becomes your communications partner.

I’m here to help you with your editing needs, including:

  • Proofreading: Checking texts for misspellings or typos, incorrect grammar, punctuation or disagreements in subject-verb usage.

  • Copy-Editing: This includes the proofreading mentioned above, but also checks style, consistency and formatting. Copy-editing also includes suggested changes to enhance meaning, clarity, or flow.

  • Substantive Editing: Going beyond proofreading and editing, a substantive edit helps you ‘tighten up’ your text by eliminating unnecessary wordiness, jargon, or repetition, helping you achieve a polished, clear text with consistent messaging and tone.

Literary Translation, Proofreading and Editing

Fees

Depending on the project at hand, I work with different fee schedules, including: 

  • Per-word translations (CHF 0.30 - CHF 0.40 depending on technical nature; discounted rates for NGOs and charities)

  • Per-hour (CHF 120; discount rates available depending on volume)

  • Project-based fee structures (overall fee in agreement with you, based on estimated hours worked)

  • Mandates (for long-term or continuous/regular volumes; per-hour fees)

Sample translations (50 words max) available.

Discount rates are available for large-volume texts.

Rush jobs will incur a 30% surcharge on the total.
